Consumer participation in staff selection
The Consumer Participation in Staff Selection strategy was initiated and consumer driven and supported by management. This document reports the outcomes of an evaluation of the strategy. It reports significant impacts and achievements including collaborative partnership and increased mutual respect.

Governance
This paper of the Community Advisory Committee on Women's Health proposes a new Governance Framework to support the Board of the Royal Women's Hospital (Melbourne) in meeting its responsibility to ensure effective community participation.

Consumer Reference Group
The Banyule Nillumbik Primary Care Alliance Hypertension Project, also known as "Take the pressure down", aims to improve health outcomes and quality of life for consumers withy, or at risk of, hypertension in the areas of Banyule and Nillumbik. A Consumer Reference Group was established to give consumers the opportunity to have "a voice" in the management of hypertension in the community. Fourteen months into the project the Consumer Reference Group was evaluated and the findings are now available.

Audit of participation activities
To encourage staff to plan and carry out their own participation activities, participation guidelines were developed by Hunter health (NSW). An audit of consumer participation activities was undertaken in 2002 (prior to the guidelines) and a second audit was done 12 months later after the introduction of the guidelines. The second audit of participation activities showed a 42.5% increase in consumer activities. An overview of this work is available from NSW Health website.

Community Advisory Committees are a mandatory structure for all Victorian hospitals, designed to improve community participation in Victorian public health services. This article Southern Health: Working with the Community outlines the Committee's progress in integrating consumer and community participation as core business of the health service, with a particular emphasis on the development of a Community Participation Plan.

Guidelines to selecting consumer and community representatives plus Guidelines for secretariat (resourcing representatives) are now available from the website of NSW Health. These guidelines were developed to assist government staff but they could be adapted for any type of health service.

Clinical review involving cardiac consumers
Nepean and Blue Mountains Cardiac Support Group and Wentworth Area Health Service worked in partnership to test the feasibility of including cardiac consumers at every level of clinical review at Nepean Hospital. The brief report Working as a team: consumers and clinicians as providers of a clinical support system provides an overview of the project and includes key success factors and lessons learned.

Lyell McEwin Hospital and the Northern Metropolitan Community Health Service worked together to explore community needs in relation to acute care services at the Lyell McEwin Campus and identified ways the Emergency Department could respond more effectively. A wide range of issues were identified and the following link will take you A Consumer's Perspective: Final Report, May 1999. This report was reviewed by the Improving Care Processes Special Interest Group of the National Resource Centre for Consumer Participation. Feedback from the group included that it would be useful for anyone undertaking consumer participation. It is practical, modest and very well described. The objectives and indicators are considered realistic and achievable. Focus groups held with staff to get their input was considered a strength. Information about how they decided who to contact and how they went about finding consumers would have been useful information but was not included. (Posted 28 January 2003)
