Evidence

There is a growing interest in the link between consumer participation activities and improvement in the quality and safety of health care and improvements in health outcomes. While research on consumer participation is an emerging area, the process of documenting the relationship between consumer participation and improved outcomes has only just begun with the resource The evidence supporting consumer participation in health.

In early 2002 an audit involving all units of Hunter Health (NSW) was undertaken to serve as a benchmark for future measurement of consumer participation activities and to identify areas for improvement. The results of the second audit of participation activities carried out 12 months later showed a 42.5% increase in consumer activities. Evidence that the guidelines contributed to this increase is available from NSW Health website is now available.
